Family Fertility Center is a private infertility practice founded in 1994 by Dr. H. Christina Lee. We bring hope and deliver success for couples and individuals previously unable to conceive. Thousands of families have been started at the Family Fertility Center. With our extensive experience and high success rates, we are proud to serve patients not just locally, but on an international level.

How do I choose a fertility specialist?

You may have heard of or been referred to a particular fertility specialist by your Ob/Gyn or family physician, insurance company, friends and relatives who have gone through treatment with a particular specialist or even advertising on different media.Regardless of how you heard of a fertility specialist, important factors to consider when choosing a fertility specialist are confidence in the physician and program, practice style, treatment that is tailored to your unique situation, dedication and compassion from the physician and her team, convenience of the clinic location, cost of treatment, and availability of other ancillary services.

Your confidence in a particular fertility specialist and the program is founded in the quality of the care you receive. That quality is a summation of multiple facets including:

  1. Experience and expertise of the fertility specialist and the clinic
  2. Performance of the fertility lab
  3. Integration of the lab with the fertility specialist
  4. Practice style
    1. will you have treatment tailored to your unique situation or the clinic fits you into a standard treatment protocol
    2. do you get personal attention or do you take a number and stand in line
    3. will you be seen by the physician or other extenders on a day to day basis
    4. how does the practice communicate with you when you have important questions about your treatment or are in need
  5. Do you have to travel to different offices for special procedures and who will perform these procedures on you
  6. Infertility is a highly emotionally charged matter and its treatment adds more stress to the already hectic lives. Is the staff sensitive to your needs?
  7. Does your clinic participate with your health insurance?
  8. Is the business staff helpful?
  9. And finally if you have special needs, does the clinic provide or refer to appropriate professionals? Examples include: pre-conception counseling, psychological counseling, genetic counseling, oocyte donor agencies, and gestational carrier agencies.

When should I consider seeking fertility services?

Since 90% of women become pregnant within one year of having unprotected intercourse, you should consider seeking fertility services if it has been a year since you have attempted to conceive but with no success.

Because a woman’s fertility declines naturally as she gets older, couples should consider seeking medical help after six months of trying when the female partner is over age 35. Earlier testing may also be appropriate for women with known medical problems that might affect fertility, such as polycystic ovarian disease or pelvic endometriosis, or women who are attempting to get pregnant through artificial insemination.

It is important that both partners be tested initially to allow assessment of the extent of the fertility problems. 40% of all infertility cases may be attributed to the woman, 40% to the man, in 10% of cases both partners contribute to the problem, and 10% of the time the cause can not be identified and it is unexplained.

What is a Fertility Specialist?

A physician who treats patients with infertility is known professionally as a Reproductive Endocrinologist. Training in Reproductive Endocrinology requires four years of college followed by four years of medical school. The physician must then complete a four-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN), during which the physician receives broad training in general Obstetrics and Gynecology. The final course of training is a two or three-year Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology. Fellowship training focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of infertility and related disorders. This training includes experience in microsurgery, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery, in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer, sonography, and ovulation induction. In addition, the physician spends a significant amount of time performing clinical or laboratory research.

Upon completion of a Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology, a specialist seeks Board certification, a multi-step process. To become Board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology, the physician must first obtain Board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology. This requires successful completion of both a written and an oral examination. Board certification in Reproductive Endocrinology requires successful completion of additional written and oral examinations. The entire certification process takes several years to complete. Only a physician who has successfully completed a Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and passed the examinations can become Board certified as an infertility specialist.

It is often quite difficult for a patient to determine whether or not their physician is an infertility specialist. Some physicians have gained skills through experience outside fellowship training, and some physicians successfully complete fellowship training and do not obtain Board certification. However, Board certification is the only objective criterion by which patients can measure a physician’s qualifications. Membership in the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI) is limited to board-certified reproductive endocrinologists, while associate members may be in a fellowship program or completing the examination process.

A fertility specialist focuses her practice in the treatment of infertility and stays abreast of the scientific discovery and technological advances in the field. She is usually associated with a fertility center or “program”. This specialization is necessary as advanced fertility treatment often requires the fertility specialist and her staff to be available seven days a week in order to accommodate those procedures that need to be performed, even over the weekend or holiday.

Why should I choose a Fertility Specialist?

Family Fertility Center cares for couples and individuals at all stages in the infertility journey, from the basic testing to diagnose the causes for infertility to the most advanced treatments and latest technologies available today.

For many women who met the definition of infertility, they frequently speak to their OB/Gyn about their inability to conceive. More and more Ob/Gyn refers couples or individuals immediately to a fertility specialist when infertility is suspected. They recognize what is in the best interests of the patient, to receive the most appropriate care without delay.

On the other hand, some Ob/Gyn will review the couple’s medical history, perform a physical and then proceed with a routine infertility work-up to determine the cause of the problem. The Ob/Gyn may do surgery to improve physical conditions or possibly prescribe clomiphene citrate to induce ovulation or to overcome a very mild male factor. However, if you fail to conceive after taking this medication for 3-6 months, it may be time to move on to more aggressive treatment. Some fertility problems will require more advanced treatments such as inseminations, surgeries, or in vitro fertilization and other assisted reproductive technologies. These treatments are typically performed by an infertility specialist.

Before initiating any testing or therapy, couples are strongly advised to take an active role in their fertility care and to empower themselves with a good understanding of infertility and treatment options through the various infertility resources.
